It proved something of another Sunday false dawn for the 2019 Open Champion, however, as he would end up in a tie for 13th.
He played his remaining 14 holes in two-over-par to post a closing three-under 67 and end his week on -13 overall.
American Sam Burns scorched around the North Course in 62 strokes to post the clubhouse lead at -18 and Fox was the only player to get to his total, the New Zealander posting four under in his final round.
A play-off was the result as the duo returned to the 18th hole to battle it out for the title, and they could not be separated for the first three attempts as they both made a trio of pars to continue to the fourth extra hole, again down the finishing straight.
But on this occasion, the two golfers went for the green in two on the par five, and while both reached the putting surface, it was advantage Fox who nailed his approach to about six feet from the flag.
Burns had a go from about 30 feet but raced it past the hole and was still away with his birdie putt, which he missed, as the ball lipped out, leaving Fox with two putts to win.
And while Fox rolled his eagle putt just past the hole, he made no mistake with the next from less than two feet as he tapped home to claim the title.
